2.1904 Platonic And Aristotelian Theories Of Mimesis.
Plato and Aristotle both had similar views on imitation in art. But they differed in key ways as well. As we will see, Plato viewed mimesis as a kind of paradox. All in all, Plato's view of mimesis seems generally negative, for all the danger it presents to morality. Aristotle more or less adopted Plato's main points, as we will also see, but redefined some of the rather strict Platonic ideas about art and its uses, making it much less 'alarming' and potentially corrupting. This paper will explore the areas of overlap in the Platonic and Aristotelian views of mimesis, as well as the differences, making a case for a similar, yet profoundly different view of it in the conclusion. It begins by outlining both theories of imitation, and follows by discussing the respective strengths and shortcomings of both before concluding. 5.5 pgs. 9 f/c. 3b.

4.2433 The Meeting of West and East: The Philosophy of Rational Love in Parmenides of Elea and Herman Hesse's Siddhartha.
In the analysis of the representation of the "way of truth" and the "way of opinion" in the work of Parmenides, we are confronted with the problem presented by the second half of the poem where a description of the physical world seems to contradict the principles of method which Parmenides lays out in the first part of his poem. This paper will argue that a way of reconciling this apparent contradiction may be found if we compare Parmenides' approach to phenomenal reality with that of another philosophical tradition: Buddhism. The novel Siddhartha, by the Swiss Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse, addresses many of the same issues as Parmenides with respect to how we are to distinguish between the "opinions" of mortals and grasp a "true" sense of the real world. 8.5 pgs. 13 f/c. 2b.
