1. 2218 Female Leads: the role of women in Wycherley and Shakespeare.

This paper compares and contrasts the two different central female characters in the plays "The Country Wife" by William Wycherley and "Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare. 4.5 pgs. 3 f/c. 2b.

2. 1534 Brett Ashley and Sasha Jensen: Lost Women of a Lost Generation.

This distinction between the 1920s and the 1930s may be seen in the novels The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, and Good Morning, Midnight by Jean Rhys. Both novels prominently feature women who live frivolously from day to day, desperately attempting to "buy" their happiness; or, at least, to buy the alcohol with which they may buy "forgetfulness" of their traumatic pasts. Indeed, in many respects the character of Sasha Jensen from Good Morning, Midnight may be seen as an older version of Brett Ashley from The Sun Also Rises. While in the Hemingway novel, first published in 1926 at the height of the Jazz Age, displays the figure of Brett as an elegantly wasted English Lady, the figure of Sasha Jensen, from Rhys' 1939 novel, displays the physical and spiritual costs of this life of dissipation carried on for over a decade. Read as such, these two female characters serve as cultural "bookends" or markers to the long intermission between the wars. 5 pgs. 8 f/c. 2b.

3. 1917 The Romantic Prodigy: The Art and Life of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley can justifiably be thought of as one of the few child prodigies in literature, alongside Arthur Rimbaud. She produced an enduring class, Frankenstein, at the tender age of 19, a work that continues to inform, warn, and delight millions of people in the world today. The substance of Mary's eventful life was, of course, incredibly influential in shaping her writing. This paper will assess the role of Mary's life in her writing, and examine how the two interacted. 6.5 pgs. 8 f/c. 2b.

4. 2078 The Book of Eve and Marriage.

In The Book of Eve, Eva Caroll discovers a new sense of herself after leaving her husband who, although not cruel, has been an oppressive force in her life. In many respects, Eva's marriage was an accurate portrayal of marriage in the 1950s-1970s period. To a large extent, the institution of marriage still has not really changed. There is, to be sure, more opportunity for women today in the public sphere, which has empowered women to an extent within marriage and within divorce. Indeed, with an increased ability to get an education and earn their own money, women have more leeway in their decision-making. Nonetheless, the institutions of marriage and the nuclear family continue force severe constraints on women in general, as does the capitalist system within which they exist. 8 pgs. 9 f/c. 8b.

5. 2599 The Female Obstacle: The relation of women and individualism in 1984 and Brave New World.

This paper looks at both works and how they are concerned with the problem of individualism, of maintaining an individual identity while living in a strictly conformist society. Both works associate the potential for becoming a true individual with men, while women are characterized as unable to assume such an identity mainly because of their failure to overcome their physical nature. 5.5 pgs. 3 f/c. 2b.

6. 3985 Jane Eyre: Cultivating The Feminine as Feminist.

This paper reads Jane Eyre with attention to the symbols of Nature, and the natural relations that Jane assumes within the natural world. Bronte offers the moon as a feminine symbol in the story, one that reappears as a source of light and inspiration for Jane, thus presenting the moon as a feminine Ideal. With this symbolic representation of nature in gendered terms, Bronte provides a feminist novel, where the prominent feature of Jane's character is her independence and personal will, and is symbolized in a feminine ideal of Nature. 6 pgs. Bibliography lists 1 source.

7. 3990 "Critical Condemnation" and Vindication: Critical Perspectives of "The Awakening".

This 5-page, 5-source article traces studies how Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" was received by critics when it was first published in 1899. The paper traces how critics reviled against the work because its style and content were highly critical of how women were manipulated and shaped by the society in which they lived. Also, many critics saw only the sensual and sexual aspects of the novel, missing its larger themes. The author then analyzes the text, showing how the protagonist, Edna, shocked readers in the early 20th century by reviling in her own sensuality, having numerous affairs, desiring a career, and being indifferent toward raising children. Finally, the author shows the novel's thematic content would predate the feminist and impressionist literary movements. 5 pgs. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
